The DMK, which split from the DK, tapped into Dravidianism and pursued a politics of community, putting together a broad coalition of the intermediate and lower strata. This has kept the party going all these years. Seen at one stage as an extreme, mass communal force, it has grown into a body that has learnt the art of moderation deftly
