In the 1980 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, Congress leader K.S. Haja Shereff won from Triplicane. The next year, Governor Sadiq Ali announced that Shereff was to be disqualified because of his appointment as Turkey’s Honorary Consul-General in Madras. Shereff moved the Madras High Court, which upheld his disqualification
