The Tamil Nadu government has worked out plans for deep-sea archaeological excavations between Poompuhar, also known as Kaveripoompattinam, and Nagapattinam, nearly 50 kilometres south. The excavations are expected to offer insights into the glorious past of Poompuhar, which has elaborate mentions in the Sangam literature
