While being hospitalised in the U.S., MGR led the AIADMK to a record victory in the 1984 Assembly election. Immediately after he formed his government in February 1985, two petitions argued that while filing nomination from hospital, a candidate should take his oath before a medical practitioner, not before a consular agent as MGR did
